A Debit Card for Your Child

June 25th, 2009

Learning about finances should be a part of growing up, which means you have to teach your kids about them along the way. The good news, however, is that a debit card is a great way to teach your child about spending money. Actually, a prepaid credit card can make for a fantastic method to teach money management.

How does this work?

Well, a prepaid credit or debit card is exactly what it sounds like. It is a prepaid card that you just deposit a certain amount of money on and use. You can deposit $100 and your child will not be able to spend more than that amount. If they do spend it all, then they cant do anything else until its time for more money to be placed on the card.

What this does is teach your kids that once they spend their money, they have no other options. This is true for real life. If you spend all of your money, you have to wait until you get paid again until you can do anything. It is important that kids learn this so that they do not have to live from paycheck to paycheck when they are adults.

You can also teach saving money to your child by encouraging him or her not to spend all of the money on their card. They can accumulate their money so that they can do things that they want to do. If they want to go on an outing with their friends, then they can use their saved money to do so.

You can take pride in what you’re doing is teaching your child how to save and manage money. A smart way to go about this is deposit your child’s allowance on the card instead of giving them money just because. When a child works for their cash, they are more likely to be careful with it. Even birthday or holiday money can be deposited onto the card.

Kids also learn to keep track of their transactions. They can track transactions online, keep a register that they must write in when they spend money, and they will think about a purchase before making it. It is important to keep track of transactions so that your child doesn’t try to buy something and find that there is not enough money left. This can be an embarrassing situation and one that your child will not want to have to deal with. Learning to keep track of transactions can help with this.

So when looking for a valuable teaching tool, a debit card is definitely a great one. Just make sure it is a prepaid credit card or debit card so that your child has limitations.
